There is a link in the American Gulag story to this case, about a Canadian man who was kidnapped by American officials in New York and sent to Syria to be tortured: http://reason.com/blog/2009/11/04/no-legal-remedy-for-government
This strikes me as one of the worst things that can happen to anyone. It reminds me of the case in Texas of the innocent man executed after his family died in a fire. In the CIA kidnapping case, the courts ruled the man had no legal recourse.
It’s one thing when something terrible happens to someone, but the community is there to offer support. In these cases, it is the community itself that turns into a force of evil.
